The Nobel Sustainability Trust has awarded the 2024 Medal to President Claudia Sheinbaum for her significant contributions to the sustainability of our planet. The Nobel Sustainability Trust Foundation announced that it will present an award to President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo for the policies she has implemented in favor of sustainability in the country and to preserve the environment.
The Nobel Sustainability Trust selected the Mexican leader to receive the 2024 Outstanding Contribution to Sustainability Medal for her "exceptional" efforts in the field. Michael Nobel, founder of the foundation, expressed in a letter his congratulations to Sheinbaum for her innovative policies and pioneering approaches that have significantly contributed to environmental conservation, the adoption of renewable energies, and sustainable urban development.
During her term in Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum implemented pioneering policies for environmental care, such as reducing carbon emissions by expanding public transportation, creating green spaces, and promoting sustainable urban mobility. Her strong defense of climate action is also highlighted by aligning Mexico City's commitments with international agreements in the fight against climate change.
Sheinbaum's government in the capital of the country has encouraged active citizen participation in environmental decision-making, seeking to ensure that sustainability begins at the community level. Additionally, she has promoted the use of clean energies, such as solar energy, to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and make Mexico a reference in renewable energies. Recognizing the vulnerability of urban areas to climate change, sustainable infrastructure and disaster preparedness have been strengthened.
The award ceremony will take place on November 20 and 21 at the University of California, Berkeley. Attendance is expected from UN leaders, members of the Nobel family, royal families, and charitable foundations. Other awardees include former UN leader Ban Ki-moon and academics who have made significant contributions to sustainability. There will be surprise speeches from other leaders during the award ceremony.
